Your day tour begins in the morning with a drive south of Addis Ababa along the Addis Hawassa road, passing through the Ethiopian Rift Valley and enjoying the changing landscapes of farmland, hills, and small villages along the way. The first stop will be at Melka Konture, an important prehistoric site situated on the banks of the Awash River.
This site is one of the most significant archaeological locations in Ethiopia, known for yielding thousands of Stone Age tools and fossils. At the small museum, you will have the chance to see stone artifacts, hand axes, and other prehistoric findings that provide a glimpse into the lives of early humans who once lived in the area.
After exploring Melka Konture, the journey continues further south to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tiya. This archaeological site is famous for its collection of ancient stelae, more than thirty intricately carved standing stones that mark burial grounds dating back to the 12th to 14th centuries.
The stelae are decorated with mysterious symbols and carvings whose exact meanings remain uncertain, though they are believed to represent warriors and commemorate important figures of the time. Walking through the site, you will learn about Ethiopia’s rich ancient heritage and its lesser-known but fascinating archaeological history.
Lunch will be taken in a nearby town, where you can enjoy traditional Ethiopian dishes and freshly brewed local coffee. In the afternoon, you may also have time to interact with local communities or enjoy the surrounding countryside before beginning your return journey to Addis Ababa.
By late afternoon or early evening, you will arrive back in the city, concluding your day of exploration into Ethiopia’s prehistoric past and its remarkable archaeological treasures.
