4 Days Small Group Joining Simien Mountains Trekking

In the main season, we’re offering our clients 4-day trekking tours in the Simien Mountains with fixed departure dates – this way you can join other hikers and share the costs. Our Simien Mountains Adventure departs from Addis Ababa / Gondar every week for a 4-day, 3-night adventure. You will return to Gondar on the final day around late afternoon. This itinerary is also available for private trips, regardless of the number of participants, offering flexibility and personalized experiences for your group. The price per person is based on the total number of participants. To secure your spot, we kindly ask for a deposit of 15% USD or EUR per person. The remaining balance, depending on the final group size, can be paid upon arrival in cash (USD or EUR) or at our office. Optional extensions are also available to enhance your adventure, including: A 4-day excursion to the Danakil Depression and A 6-day exploration of Southern Ethiopia’s Omo Valley

Day 1

After breakfast, the vehicle picks us up at the hotel in Gondar and takes us 100 km north on the Ethiopian highlands to Debark, a small town of about 35,000 inhabitants at the border of the Simien National Park. After a quick stop for formalities at the park headquarters and to collect the cook and scouts, we drive out on a rough road to the Sankaber area (approx. 3,100 m above sea level), where we take a short acclimatization walk. We get our first impressive views over the dramatic mountain range and see typical flora such as Heather Trees (Erica arborea), St. John’s Wort (Hypericum revulutum), and Abyssinian Wild Rose (Rosa abissinica). This area also hosts the largest population of Gelada Baboons (Theropithecus gelada). Accommodation: Sankaber Campsite, Simien Mountains National Park

Day 2

At Sankaber, we organize mules and mulemen to carry our heavy camping and cooking equipment. You only need a light daypack with water, camera, light jacket, and personal items. After breakfast, we traverse the northern escarpment, descending to get dramatic views of Jinbar Waterfall. In the gorge, we may see large birds like Griffon, Lappet-faced or Nubian Vultures, Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture), and other species such as buzzards and ibises. Possible mammal sightings include Klipspringers (Oreotragus oreotragus) and Menelik’s Bushbucks (Tragelaphus scriptus). We lunch near the Jinbar River, then ascend through terraced farmland to Geech Camp (3,600 m). In the evening, we may walk up to Kedadit Mountain (3,760 m) for a breathtaking sunset. Accommodation: Geech Campsite, Simien Mountains

Day 3

After breakfast, we hike for about 2 hours to Imet Gogo (3,926 m), offering spectacular 360° panoramic views and visibility of Ras Dashen, Ethiopia’s highest peak. We then trek along the escarpment, cross a small valley, and ascend Inatye Peak (4,070 m), our lunch stop with views 1,000 m down to mountain villages like Dihwara, Tiya, Amiwalka, and Truwata. We pass through fields of Giant Lobelia (Lobelia rhynchopetalum), Heather Trees (Erica arborea), and Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia foliosa). We descend and reach Chennek Camp (3,620 m) in the afternoon the best spot for observing Gelada Baboons, Walia Ibex (Capra ibex), and possibly the Ethiopian Wolf (Canis simensis). Accommodation: Chennek Campsite

Day 4

Early morning departure from Chennek Camp, climbing ~600 m to Bwahit Pass (approx. 4,200 m). This is the pass for those attempting Ras Dashen, which takes at least two more days. If physical conditions allow, we continue to Ras Bwahit Peak (4,430 m) one of the highest in the area. After descending to Chennek, we return by car to Debark via a 58 km rough road, and then take the asphalt road to Gondar, arriving in the late afternoon. Accommodation: Tent camping at designated campsites throughout the trek.
