12 Days Insights into Southern Ethiopia

This tour is designed to give you true insights into what Southern Ethiopia is really like. Culturally and geographically diverse, with little in common with Ethiopia’s northern regions, it feels like a world of its own. The southwest is home to one of the most colorful and varied cultural landscapes anywhere in the world. Nearly 15 different peoples, each with their own traditions, lifestyles, and beliefs, inhabit this remarkable region.

Accompanied by one of Bale Trek Ethiopia Tours’ experienced guides (English, Italian, French & German available), you will visit the castellated settlements of the Konso people and meet their king, encounter the skilled weavers of the Dorze, and wander through picturesque villages of coffee farmers in the Sidama region.

This journey deliberately leaves out some of the usual ‘must-sees’ to give you a more immersive experience of authentic, less touristic places that reflect Southern Ethiopia in its truest form.

From the savannas and semi-deserts of the Great African Rift Valley, you will climb into the mountains to explore the Bale Mountains National Park home to Ethiopia’s rarest endemic wildlife, including Ethiopian wolves, Mountain Nyala antelopes, and dozens of endemic and semi-endemic bird species. Over three days you will cross a variety of landscapes, from lush juniper forests and alpine grasslands to the barren Afro-alpine plateau Africa’s highest and finally descend into one of Ethiopia’s last untouched rainforests.

The journey concludes on the serene shores of Lake Langano, shaded by giant trees. Here you can swim, relax, and reflect on your adventures before returning home. Overnights are spent in carefully selected, beautifully located mid-range to high-range hotels and lodges.
