5-Day Historic Tour – Discover Beautiful Ethiopia

During this 5-day historic tour of Ethiopia, you will explore Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, Lake Tana Monasteries, Blue Nile Waterfalls, Gondar, and the Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela the most iconic attractions in Ethiopia’s historic northern circuit.

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, clients will be greeted and transferred to their hotel in central Addis Ababa. The city is Ethiopia’s geographic, political, and cultural hub and stands out among African capitals for never having been colonized. One of Addis Ababa’s most notable sites is the National Museum of Ethiopia, which houses the remains of “Lucy”, a 3.2-million-year-old hominid discovered in 1974.

If arriving early, guests may take an optional city tour of this vibrant capital, established by Emperor Menelik II in 1887. The tour includes: National Museum (home of Lucy) and Ethnographic Museum, set within the gardens of Haile Selassie’s former palace. In the evening, gather with fellow travelers for a welcome dinner. Day 2: Flight to Bahir Dar – Lake Tana & Blue Nile Falls

Take a morning flight to Bahir Dar, transfer to your hotel, and enjoy breakfast. Begin the day with a boat trip on Lake Tana, visiting two of the most accessible and beautifully painted medieval monasteries: Ura Kidane Mehret and Azwa Maryam

On the way back, witness the outlet of the Blue Nile, the world’s longest river, as it departs from the lake. After lunch, drive to the Blue Nile Falls (Note: water levels depend on rainfall). The scenic drive and enjoyable walk to the falls offer a memorable experience. Overnight: Hotel in Bahir Dar

Day 3: Drive to Gondar – “Camelot of Africa”

Depart for Gondar (185 km), passing through the scenic farmlands of the Amhara region. Stop en route at Awra Amba, a unique egalitarian community where women and men have equal rights, and labor is not divided by gender.

Continue to Gondar, the seat of many emperors during the 17th and 18th centuries and the gateway to the Simien Mountains, sitting at an altitude of 2,200 meters.

After lunch, visit:The Royal Enclosure (Castles of Gondar), The Bath of King Fasilidas, used during the Timkat Festival, which celebrates the baptism of Jesus and The Church of Debre Berhan Selassie, famous for its iconic angelic ceiling paintings, a hallmark of Ethiopian art. Day 4: Flight to Lalibela – “Eight Wonders of the World”

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as the “New Jerusalem”, Lalibela is world-famous for its monolithic rock-hewn churches, often called one of the “Eight Wonders of the World.”

These massive structures, carved entirely from solid rock, defy imagination with their scale, precision, and craftsmanship. Begin your tour with the Northwestern Cluster: Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel and Bet Mikael & Bet Golgotha.

End the day with a visit to the most famous church: Bet Giyorgis, a perfectly carved cruciform church dedicated to St. George, the patron saint of Ethiopia. Overnight: Hotel in Lalibela

Day 5: Southeastern Churches – Return to Addis Ababa – Departure

After breakfast, explore the Southeastern Cluster of churches: Bet Gabriel-Rufael, Bet Merkorios, Bet Amanuel and Bet Abba Libanos. Transfer to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, enjoy free time for shopping or relaxing. In the evening, gather for a farewell cultural dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant, featuring music and dances from Ethiopia’s diverse ethnic groups. Finally, transfer to the airport for your international departure.
